GEORGE Baldock joked he would give finishing tips to older brother Sam after bagging the only goal of the game to give Oxford United a fourth win in 12 days.

The home side appeared to be heading for a goalless draw against AFC Wimbledon as they struggled to get close to the level which saw them sweep Swindon Town aside in midweek.

But, ten minutes from time, Baldock found space to advance and unleash a low shot from 25 yards which found the net via the far post.

Among those watching on was Sam Baldock, the Brighton & Hove Albion striker, and the delighted match-winner declared he would be happy to pass on some advice.

“I’ll try and wind him up, but he’ll bring his goalscoring record up and that will be the end of that,” he said.

“I was saying to my dad the other day I’ve been going forward so much I need to add goals to my game.

“I might have to tell him that every week. I can’t stop smiling.

“I just thought ‘why not?’ The other boys have had their moments, so I thought I’d try and get in on the act.

“It was a really good moment and I’m buzzing to get the three points for the club.”

The victory was the side’s fourth in succession in all competitions, their best run for almost three years.

And Baldock felt it was an impressive response after collecting just two points from the previous three games.

He said: “It means so much because the boys have really deserved it.

“We had that disappointing game at Northampton (a 1-0 defeat) and then the OK draws against Portsmouth and Morecambe.

“We didn’t play well against Wimbledon, but we showed great character.

“If you can win when you don’t play so well, it’s the sign of a good team.”

There was concern in the build-up over how much the win over Swindon had taken out of the side.

Baldock did not feel any trace of a hangover from the game and put it down to United’s unsung backroom members.

He said: “A lot of people look at clubs having sports scientists and physios and wonder what they really do, but to be fair they’ve been brilliant.

“They got us in on Thursday to do a warm-up and then a bit of light possession.

“On Friday we did a few games and then we were off home to rest.

“We’ve got 25 professionals who didn’t go out after such a big win, they rested up and it put them in good stead for the game.”
