OXFORD United skipper Jake Wright hailed the side’s promotion to Sky Bet League One as the best moment in his career.

The U’s finished as runners-up in League Two thanks to a 3-0 win against Wycombe Wanderers at the Kassam Stadium, leapfrogging Accrington Stanley.

Wright is the only survivor from the squad which went up with the U’s via the Conference play-offs in 2010, but the centre back reckoned this season topped the lot.

He said: “It’s amazing, the best feeling I’ve had in football.

“It’s relief more than anything, I think we deserved to go up.

“We had 83 points and that should have been enough, but we showed real bottle to win the last three games of the season.

“It’s a great achievement whether you played a minute or every game.”

U’s boss Michael Appleton was delighted to come out of a long season with a promotion.

“It feels fantastic,” he said.

“It’s been a great season with the runs in the FA Cup and getting to Wembley in the JPT, but it’s topped off by the way the players went about their business today.

“Although it was 0-0 at half-time we knew we were starting to turn the screw. We knew if we kept a clean sheet we would score goals.”

U’s top scorer reckoned the victory over the Chairboys was the highlight of the entire season.

He said: “It’s got to be today, hasn’t it? Getting promoted, you can’t beat that.

“It’s rounded it all off completely. As an individual and a team this is amazing, this was the main goal.”

Goalkeeper Benji Buchel, who kept a third straight clean sheet, said: "We worked the whole season and every day so hard.

"It went to the last game, there was so much pressure and we won it, I just can't describe it.

"It will probably take me a couple of days to realise how good we have been this season."

Danny Hylton picked up the supporters' player of the season award before kick-off.

He said: "Today was the biggest game of the season and we knew we needed to win.

"Over ten months we have aimed to achieved this and we have finally done it, so I am over the moon."

Callum O'Dowda, who scored in stoppage time to seal the 3-0 win, said: "That was unbelievable.

"Winning the game comfortably was immense but for me personally, to score and do it like that is just an unbelievable moment.
