DANNY Hylton has turned down a new contract at Oxford United and signed for Luton Town.

The popular forward’s existing deal expired this summer, but he was offered improved terms by the U’s after helping them win promotion to Sky Bet League One.

Instead Hylton, who scored 30 goals in 85 starts since joining United in 2014, has opted to stay in the fourth tier for a two-year deal.

It is unlikely to go down well with U’s supporters, who voted him player of the year in both seasons he was at the club.

He told Luton's website: "It’s an honour to join Luton – it’s a massive club.

"Obviously last season I was playing against Luton, they’ve got a fantastic style of play especially since Nathan (Jones) came on board, I’m excited to be here.”

The 27-year-old is the second of United’s promotion-winning side to join the Hatters, with free agent Johnny Mullins unveiled at Kenilworth Road this afternoon.

United are still waiting for an answer from Chris Maguire, the other player offered a new contract this month.

An answer is expected by the end of the week.

Hylton's last goal for the U's came against Luton, in a 3-2 defeat at the Kassam Stadium last month.
