CURTIS Nelson has become Oxford United’s sixth signing of the summer.

The 23-year-old finalised a two-year deal, with the U’s retaining an option for an additional season, before training with his new teammates at Bisham Abbey this morning.

Nelson has racked up almost 250 appearances for Plymouth Argyle, who offered him a new contract after their defeat in the League Two play-off final in May.

The defender joins as a free agent, but as he is under 24 the Pilgrims will receive compensation from United, to be set by a tribunal.

Head coach Michael Appleton said: “He’s a good player and another who has played a lot of games for his age.

“He is a great competitor and a good organiser and I think a lot of Oxford fans will have been impressed when he played against us over the last couple of seasons.

"Plymouth were hoping to keep him but as soon as we found out that he wasn’t going to accept their offer we were keen to get him to Oxford.

“We are delighted that he has opted to join us ahead of the new season.”

Nelson, who scored against United in the 2-2 draw at Home Park in March, said: “I’m really happy being at Oxford, it’s a step up in league from last year and it’s a big club.

“I met the boys this morning and I can’t wait to get started.”
