SCORING in front of the Oxford United supporters gave Liam Sercombe a “massive grin” as they beat Swindon Town 2-1 on derby day.

The midfielder had seen a glorious chance to get on the scoresheet go begging in the first half as United sought to get back in the game after Fankaty Dabo’s strike.

But the 26-year-old was in the right place in the 70th minute to convert Marvin Johnson’s cross from close range.

The goal, and Rob Hall’s winner shortly afterwards, came yards from the Stratton Bank, which housed most of the 2,700 travelling supporters.

He said: “It feels so good to see the fans so happy and knowing you’ve done it puts a massive grin on your face.

“I’m sure they’re all smiling after it.”

Sercombe’s finish was untidy, but he did not care and again thanked Johnson for providing the assist.

He said: “I think three of my four goals this season have come from Marv and I always know where he likes to play the ball.

“People keep saying I scuffed it.

“I’d like to see it back, but I think there was a defender who could’ve cleared it.

“He sliced it and I swung a leg at it.

“I think it came off my right knee, but I was so happy for it to go in – if I had missed that I think I would’ve been substituted.”

Sercombe spoke in the build-up about knowing keeping cool heads would be key and so it proved as Swindon stopper Lawrence Vigouroux saw red late on.

“They are an absolute shambles with their discipline,” Sercombe said.

“I don’t know what they’re doing, it’s happened so many times, especially their keeper.

“If they want to carry on doing that then we’ll just carry on beating them.”
