ROB Hall was on a high after scoring Oxford United’s 100th goal in a season which ended with a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Shrewsbury Town.

And the winger dedicated the victory to the club’s supporters, who have given both himself and the team superb backing over a mammoth 62-game campaign.

Hall showed the instincts of a predatory striker, timing his run perfectly to bundle in Chris Maguire’s 17th minute cross to take his tally for the campaign to six.

It came within 60 seconds of Curtis Nelson’s powerful opener and brought up a century of strikes in all competitions – the second successive time Michael Appleton’s side have managed the feat.

“I was buzzing with the goal,” Hall said.

“It was one where if you don’t get in the right position you don’t get lucky.

“I don’t know how it went in, but I definitely got a touch.

“Marv (Marvin Johnson) made a good run for me.

“He held off and a couple of the defenders stayed with him because he’s the danger man, but luckily I managed to get into a position they might not have thought I’d get to.

“It ricocheted off me, but it went in.”

He added: “They had a game plan and did make it hard for us.

“It wasn’t the best of pitches to play our style of football, but we knew that.

“We didn’t play too well, but we got the three points and we’re happy with that.”

Almost 9,300 fans watched the game and the vast majority stayed at the Kassam Stadium for the squad’s lap of honour.

Hall enjoyed the opportunity to applaud their backing, after the supporters welcomed his return from a serious knee injury in November,

He said: “It was a time for us to really show our appreciation to the fans.

“It was nice to give thanks to them.

“They have been patient with me especially because it was a tough start to the season, but when I got going they took to me.”

U’s boss Michael Appleton echoed the praise for United’s supporters, who chanted his name regularly throughout the game.

He said. “They’ve been great, even when things haven’t been going particularly well.

“They’ve stuck with us.”
