Soccer ace Madine guilty of assault
A Championship footballer has been found guilty of assaulting a supporter of his own team in a nightclub.
Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine, 23, was found guilty of causing Daniel Beresford actual bodily harm in the city's Paris Bar.
But a jury at Leeds Crown Court cleared Madine of the more serious offence of causing Mr Beresford grievous bodily harm.
The jury of seven men and five women is continuing to deliberate on charges relating to a second incident in which Madine is accused of attacking a Sheffield United fan, Reece Hall, in another Sheffield nightclub four weeks after the first incident.
Judge Rodney Jameson QC told the jury he would accept a majority verdict on the remaining counts.
Madine denied causing grievous bodily harm and the alternative charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Mr Beresford.
He also denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent and the alternative charge of causing grievous bodily harm against Mr Hall.
Later, the jury found Madine guilty of causing Mr Hall grievous bodily harm after finding him not guilty of the more serious charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
