A young woman has died and a second remains in a critical condition in hospital after a car ploughed into a bus shelter, police said.

The pair were waiting at the stop when the car mounted the pavement and hit the shelter.

One woman, who has not been named but is in her 20s, was confirmed dead at the scene. A second remains in a critical condition in hospital, West Midlands Police said.

Both their families have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police liaison officers.

The crash, which destroyed the bus shelter, happened on Hagley Road, Birmingham, just before 8pm on Saturday.

The male car driver was treated for minor injuries and taken to City Hospital, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

West Midlands Police said a 32-year-old Birmingham man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Sergeant Paul Hughes, leading the investigation, said: "We need witnesses to come forward and help our inquiries - it doesn't matter how minor you believe the information you hold is, it could be vital to us. Please call us on 101."
