THE story of how the French Revolution turned from Republican dream to bloodbath is told in The Domino Players’ autumn production.

The Wantage-based Players are performing an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ only historical novel, A Tale of Two Cities, which is set in London and Paris before and during the revolution.

Despite dealing with what become known as The Terror — the horrific aftermath of the fall of Bastille prison — the story has at its heart a tale of love and redemption.

The plight of the French peasantry under the oppression of the aristocracy in the run-up to the revolution, and how the tables were then turned by the revolutionaries against their former masters, is depicted side by side with parallels of life in London during the same period.

The Players are joined in the production of the Matthew Francis adaptation by members of Whippersnapper, the Wantage-based youth theatre company.

A Tale of Two Cities can be seen at Lains Barn, Ardington, from Wednesday to Friday, November 4 to 6, at 7.30pm. Tickets at £8 (£7 concessions) are available from the Vale and Downland Museum, Wantage, on 01235 760176, The Domino Players on 01235 868396, or online at the website www.dominoplayers.co.uk
