A dramatic injury-time penalty by Ben Whitehead snatched a welcome Evo-Stik Southern League point for Wantage Town as they drew 1-1 at Mangotsfield Town on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead in the 58th minute of the Division 1 South & West clash when Lewis Powell turned sharply in the box to fire home under debutant keeper Dan Smith.

But in stoppage time, following a foul on Jake Johns, Whitehead fired home from the spot to end Wantage’s run of three successive defeats.

Didcot Town were denied late on as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Cinderford Town.

Mark Janes’s strike was cancelled out by Joe Parker’s tap-in just five minutes from the end.

The Railwaymen thought they should have been awarded a penalty in the opening ten minutes when Mark Francis was tripped in the box.

The visitors broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half. Francis played in Janes, who fired his shot past Alex Harris.

They should have doubled their lead, but Janes was denied by Harris and the header on the rebound by Josh Dutton-Black went narrowly wide.

With the hosts pushing forward, Didcot were denied the win when their defence failed to deal with a floating cross and Parker tapped in to snatch a point for the hosts.

l Didcot Town joint-boss Ian Concannon shrugged off their 14-0 thumping at home to Milton Keynes Dons in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup.

After watching the Railway- men’s humiliation at the hands of the Sky Bet Championship club, Concannon said: “They had seven first-teamers out there and we made several changes, so it was always going to be difficult.

“I’m not worried about it. A county cup game is the least of my priorities.”
