MUMS in Oxfordshire have slammed the notion of spending "a fortune" on their children's Christmas presents.

Toy retailer Argos has revealed its predictions for the toys on children's wish lists this year, which include a Tiny Treasures Baby Doll priced at £78.00, a Vtech Baby Toot Toot Drivers Gold Mine Train Set Toy at £52.00 and, coming in at the cheapest, a Lego City Volcano for £24.99.

Sarah Brown, from Blackbird Leys, said she thought parents spent too much money on gifts for their children, considering many of them will be too young to remember receiving them.

The mother-of-two added: "People feel the need to always be outdoing each other and to buy bigger, better and more expensive things so that they can show off to their friends by posting photos on social media.

"But it's just ridiculous really because, while it might be okay to buy a 14-year-old a nice scooter or something, it's ridiculous to spend a lot of money on something a child won't even want to play with in a few months' time, or won't even remember receiving.

"I buy all of my presents from a catalogue over the year so that it's actually affordable to give out Christmas presents and they seem perfectly happy with what they're given."

Chief toy buyer for Argos Linzi Walker said she thought the list of predictions showed the way in which toys were evolving.

She said: "Where once there was a baby doll that simply looked like the real thing, we now have one that smells as sweet as a newborn."
