ONE of the city's independent schools will play host to a professional opera company and local orchestra for one night only as part of a professional production of one of Mozart's masterpieces.

Don Giovanni, which tells the story of the womaniser's last day on earth, is being put on at Rye St Antony to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Heritage Opera, a company that tours throughout the UK.

Director of music at the school, Chris Gill, said: "The singers have appeared in principal roles with major companies such as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

"This intelligent and thought-provoking production by Sarah Helsby Hughes is performed in specially-made period costumes, and sung in the original Italian with English subtitles."

Heritage Opera has produced more than 20 operas in the last decade, earning itself critical acclaim from the Times, Opera magazine and the Evening Standard.

The company will also be visiting two Oxfordshire primary schools as part of its educational outreach programme to perform its own version of Mozart's fairytale opera The Magic Flute.

The workshops at Rye St Antony Preparatory School on Monday June 6 and Sunningwell Church of England Primary School on June 7 will see the pupils getting involved with singing, dancing, acting and making props and costumes
