AFTER a sweltering heatwave, summer in Oxfordshire seems to be going out with a whimper rather than a bang.

As a host of bank holiday weekend events continue today and others are just starting, the county is set to be pelted continually for seven hours.

From 10am, the Met Office is forecasting solid black clouds and rain until 5pm - just the period families might have been hoping to go out.

It is also set to be especially windy today with gusts up to 34mph making umbrella-handling especially tricky.

In a summary for the South East, the Met Office said: "Rain across far western areas spreading to remaining areas during the morning. Turning windy with gales possible near coasts.

"Rain turning heavy and persistent, especially during the afternoon. Rain turning lighter by evening, with winds decreasing a little. Maximum temperature 19 °C."

A taste of things to come: the rainy front at 8am which was set to sweep across the whole country.

Among the events continuing in Oxfordshire today are Oxford's Foodies Festival at South Park, Alex James's Big Feastival in the Cotswolds and Towersey Festival near Thame.

Uffington's annual White Horse Show was supposed to be getting off to a sunny start today, while Witney Fire Station is holding a (largely open-air) summer open day.
