A MAN who tried to escape police who were trying to arrest him ran over an officer's foot with a car in a frantic bid to get away.

Courtney Austin, of Furlong Close, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, was set to stand trial for the single count of escaping from lawful custody but admitted the charge yesterday, while denying one count of assault.

Oxford Crown Court heard at the hearing how police were first called to the incident at Wittenham Clumps, Oxfordshire, on September 5 last year.

They had received report from the public of an apparent domestic violence incident taking place.

Prosecutor Julian Lynch said that two uniformed officers then arrived at a parked car with 29-year old Austin in the driving seat.

In body worn footage shown to the court one police officer is seen to attempt to arrest Austin before he loudly revs the car engine and begins to perform a three-point turn.

The second officer; who filmed the incident - named as PC Hewitt, then charges the car in a bid to stop it while batons are used to smash a window.

At some point during the getaway the car runs over PC Hewitt's foot before the officers look on as the vehicle vanishes from view.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident and the crown prosecution service accepted the not guilty plea for assault.

Defending, Kellie Enever asked for the matter to be adjourned yesterday while a pre-sentence report is prepared in light of his 'good progress' since being on an earlier community order.

She added that the act of escaping arrest had been 'extremely foolish'.

Judge Ian Pringle ordered that reports were prepared and he will be sentenced at the same court on September 4.
