OXFORDSHIRE will receive nearly £7.5 million to deal with potholes, the government has announced.

The Department for Transport has clarified how £420 million worth of funding announced in the budget would be split across the country, with the south east being given £66 million for road repairs.

The county’s £7,401,000 allocation is virtually identical to that given to Surrey, and compares with Buckinghamshire’s £4.7 million and Kent’s £12.1 million.

It brings the total for the county's roads to more than £218 million this year.

The money has not yet been allocated for specific projects.

Roads Minister Jesse Norman said: “Potholes are a huge problem for all road users, and too often we see issues occurring at the same place time after time. That is why the Government is investing more in improving our roads than at any time before.

“The south east will be getting an extra £66 million this winter to keep its roads in good condition to keep drivers and cyclists safe.”

A council spokesman added: “Oxfordshire County Council is working very hard to improve the condition of roads right across the county and this year has invested an extra £10m on top of its usual budget.

“Our cabinet also recently approved further major investment into road repairs over the coming years.

“We welcome the additional funding from the DfT in recognition of the need to invest in the condition of our roads and will be looking closely at exactly what further maintenance opportunities it could bring.”

The spokesman did not say how the council would spend the funds.
