A SCHOOL trust has revealed more details about its plans for a ‘once-in-a-generation’ new Oxford primary school.

Parents will get their first chance tomorrow to give feedback on the proposals for Barton Park Primary School, part of the 885-home Barton Park estate, at a consultation event.

Due to open in September 2020 with nursery and reception intake, it will be run by the Community Schools Academy Trust, which runs nearby Cheney School and Bayards Hill Primary School in Barton.

The school will grow to 315 pupils at full capacity, but could increase to 420 if there is the demand.

An online consultation launched last week outlining the trust’s vision for the primary says it will act as a ‘feeder school’ for Cheney, along with Bayards Hill.

Details covered in the document include the planned curriculum, school day, ethos and how parents will be kept up-to-date with pupils' progress. It states: “Having been given the opportunity to develop a primary school (with nursery provision) on Barton Park, the Community Schools Academy Trust recognises that this represents a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to define the educational landscape for Barton Park.”

To keep subjects in line with Cheney, the trust intends to teach Spanish, humanities, creative arts, food, ICT, Latin and classics as a special feature at Key Stage 2, alongside the core curriculum.

There will also be the opportunity for pupils to ‘learn from experiences outside the classroom’ with a school orchestra, acting, sports, taking part in civic occasions and outdoor learning through the Forest School program.

It goes on to say Barton Park will also operate as an ‘extended school’ for pupils both before and after the usual school day – with a breakfast club from 8am and after-school clubs from 3.10pm until 4.30pm.

To keep parents updated on their child’s progress they will have access to a real-time information via the school’s website.

This will contain attendance, behaviour and achievement points and copies of school reports. There will be a weekly chance for parents to come in and see firsthand how their child is doing.

The trust said it was also keen to work with the rest of the estate, using the school as a community hub 'to help to bring together the new community of Barton Park so that the school becomes a centre for lifelong learning and community cohesion'.

The first residents moved into the estate, a joint venture between Grosvenor, Oxford City Council and housebuilder Hill, this summer.

The entire development, started in 2015, is expected to take around eight years to complete and as well as the primary school will include a new community centre.

A first consultation event will be held tomorrow between 6.30pm and 8.30pm in the Cheney School library, with a second planned for February 4. More details via csat.academy
