MORE than 100,000 people attended 3,200 events to help save 60 tonnes of carbon emissions across Oxfordshire in a single year.

Volunteers who gave 31,971 hours of their time also helped save 129 tonnes of waste from going to landfill and cut 31,596 KwH of energy being used.

The figures have been revealed by Oxfordshire's Community Action Groups network, which co-ordinates the carbon-cutting work of community groups across the county.

In its annual statement for 2017/18, the network also calculated that its groups had helped make £126,251 of consumer savings across the county, as well as saving Oxfordshire's councils a tidy £5,746.

Member groups raised a whopping £988,532 in donations for their good works, and the hours that the hundreds of volunteers put in were estimated to be worth some £414,672.

Tallying up all of its inputs and outputs, the CAG network – which received £92,000 last year from Oxfordshire County Council – worked out that its financial output for 2017/18 was £1.5 million - a 17-to-one return on investment.

Writing in their December newsletter, the CAG team wrote: "Its been an exceptionally thriving and impactful time for us all in the CAG Network this year, and we are so proud of what we have achieved by working together."

They added: "Thank you so much to all the CAGs, partners and people in the network, these figures are a testament to the power of collective action and we look forward to what we can achieve together next year."
