FIRE officers say a blaze near Wantage that left a car burnt out could have been started by a fuel leak.

No one was injured in the incident, at 1.40pm on Thursday afternoon in Faringdon Road, East Challow.

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue service say a crew from Wantage Fire station was mobilised to the report of a car on fire.

On arrival, the crew were faced with one car that was 'well alight' but with no one trapped inside.

The crew used breathing apparatus and a high pressure hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze.

Fire crew say 'it is suspected that the fire was started by a fuel leak however it is impossible to confirm the definite ignition source'.

Incident Commander, Wantage Fire Station's Watch Manager Colin Littlechild, said: “Firefighters worked quickly on arrival to extinguish the fire, and are grateful that no one was hurt in the fire.”

Thames Valley Police were in attendance for traffic management and to remove the car from the road.

The fire service then handed the incident on to the force, which is investigating.
