A CHIP pan fire spread through the kitchen of an Abingdon flat and left the occupier needing treatment for smoke inhalation.

Crews from Abingdon and Rewley Road stations were called to Dodson Court, Abingdon, at 6.11pm on Monday, where they found a blaze in the kitchen of the first floor flat.

Firefighters takled a rapidly developing fire, with the flat thick with smoke and flames visible through the first floor windows.

Wearing breathing apparatus, they quickly gained access to the building and extinguished the fire using a high-pressure hose.

Medically-trained firefighters also gave first aid to the flat's occupier, who was suffering from smoke inhalation.

Investigations into the fire revealed it had started in a chip pan, and spread as a result of attempts to extinguish the fire with water.

Photos show minor damage to the kitchen, caused by the blaze.

Incident commander, watch manager Rod Dacombe from Abingdon Fire Station, said: "Fires of this nature can be extremely serious and the occupier of the flat was fortunate that this incident did not cause further damage.

"Never leave cooking unattended, and never attempt to extinguish a chip pan fire with water, as this can cause the fire to spread rapidly."
