Chiltern House is a grand property that will leave you both shaken and stirred. James Bond author Ian Fleming is said to have written Dr No at this, the former clubhouse of Huntercombe Golf Club, 60 years ago and it was immortalised in Goldfinger where 007 reveals he “played off the nine at Huntercombe”.

Apparently, Fleming – a member of the golf club in Nuffield, near Henley-on-Thames, for 32 years - settled down in front of the impressive bay window in the library of the clubhouse to write. Built in 1910, the clubhouse was converted into six luxury homes in 1967.

John and Debbie Hillier have lived at Chiltern House for four years, having fallen in love with the property while renting it.

“We decided to make an offer to buy it from our landlord, and luckily he accepted,” they said.

“We have turned it from a rather unloved house into a very happy home and have made numerous improvements. It’s a beautiful spacious home with real elegance and character.”

The hamlet of Nuffield is equidistant between the market towns of Henley and Wallingford, both a ten-minute drive away. Golfers can enjoy a round whenever they fancy and the Chiltern countryside beckons for rambles and dog walks. A back garden gate leads from Chiltern House into Park Wood, carpeted with bluebells in the spring.

John and Debbie have put Chiltern House on the market to fulfil a long-held dream – they have bought The Inn for all Seasons, near Burford, and are planning to turn it into a luxury boutique hotel and restaurant.

Chiltern House is arranged over three floors and offers two grand sitting rooms, dining room, kitchen/breakfast room, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, double garage and lovely gardens. The property exudes character from every historic nook and cranny, boasting enormous bay windows, double-height ceilings and fine fireplaces.

The first-floor sitting room used to be the clubhouse library where Fleming penned his Bond blockbusters. The bay window has padded window seating and a south-west facing balcony to make the most of the views and the sunshine.

The elegant ground-floor sitting room also has the wow factor with original oak flooring, grand staircase and stunning fireplace, complete with woodburning stove. The dining room leads off from the sitting room via double doors which can fold back for open-plan entertaining, while the L-shaped kitchen features Shaker-style units.

On the first floor, alongside the second sitting room, is a double bedroom, study area and bathroom. The master bedroom, two further bedrooms and shower room are on the second floor.

Chiltern House is on the market at £900,000. Call Stowhill Estates on 01235 607012, www.stowhillestates.com
