A TRIO of Abingdon pubs will each hold a quiz night to raise funds to help a 10-year-old boy get specialist cancer treatment.

The idea for the simultaneous events came from Crown & Thistle manager Giancarlo Ungaro after hearing about the urgent appeal to raise £500,000.

Harry Banks, who lives near Woburn, Bedfordshire, has a rare, aggressive children’s cancer called relapsed Neuroblastoma and the pioneering treatment he requires is only available in New York or Barcelona and must start in mid-March.

Mr Ungaro has got together with two other Abingdon pubs, the Broad Face and the Kings Head and Bell, to raise funds for ‘Mad About Harry’, the fundraising campaign Harry's family have set up.

The ‘Abingdon for Harry’ quiz nights will be held simultaneously on Thursday at 7.30pm at the three pubs, with all proceeds from the evening going towards the appeal.

Mr Ungaro said: “I know we have plenty of local charities to support – but our quiz might might help make a small difference and, more importantly, raise the profile of this rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer."

He added though the pubs were business rivals for one night they were together urging their regulars and Abingdon residents to visit any one of the three.

Tickets are £5 per person with a maximum of six people per team - book by calling your chosen pub or simply turn up on the night.
