A SCHOOL in Blackbird Leys banned pupils from eating grapes - but squashed the rule after complaints from parents.

Windale Primary School launched a new healthy eating project after half term, and sent home guidance for parents about what food they should pack in their child's lunchbox.

The school's latest newsletter spoke positively about the impact of the new scheme, and thanked parents for their support, but said one issue parents had raised was 'the rule about no grapes.'

It added: "After discussion with parents, staff, children and the school governors, we have decided to update this rule.

"Children can now have grapes in their lunch box BUT THEY MUST BE SLICED IN HALF.

"This should minimise the risk of a choking hazard."

In 2016 doctors raised concerns about the lack of awareness some parents have about grapes and the choking risk they can pose.

Research suggested that grapes are the third most common cause of death among children who die from food-related choking.

Windale's newsletter, published on its website on Monday, added: "Children have been learning about which foods are healthy and how to have a balanced diet.

"Thank you so much for the time you have taken with your children to work together to find healthy alternatives for their lunch boxes."

The school in Windale Avenue teaches more than 300 pupils.
