A DISGRACED former Oxfordshire police inspector is back behind bars after arranging to meet a child with the 'full intention' of sexually abusing them.

Glenn Jones, 56, of Tutsham Way, Tonbridge, Kent, was previously an officer with Thames Valley Police, for the majority of his 32-year career based in Oxford.

He is already a registered sex offender after police raided his Bicester home in March 2015 and found thousands of indecent images and videos of children, including some as young as one or two years old.

Jones, who retired from the force around seven years ago, was sentenced on Tuesday to three years’ and six months imprisonment with a further three years on licence at Guildford Crown Court after travelling to Sussex to sexually abuse a young child on September 25 last year.

He had made the 50-mile journey from his home to a shopping centre in Shoreham, but when he got there was greeted by officers from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) and arrested.

The police investigation found that, between August 6 and September 26, Jones had spent 'significant time' arranging the meeting.

Despite stating he never intended to abuse anyone and was just ‘curious', a jury unanimously found Jones guilty on February 13 of one count of commission of an offence of sexual activity with a child.

Detective Inspector Emily Evans, who led the investigation, said: "Jones had travelled a significant distance from his home in Kent with the full intention of meeting a child to abuse them.

"It is clear that he has not learned from his previous conviction, and I am therefore pleased that he has been handed a custodial sentence reflective of his abhorrent intentions."

She added: "Child abuse is one of the most repugnant crimes we deal with, and I’d like to reassure everyone that reports of this nature will always be investigated fully and sensitively, regardless of the current or past profession of the parties involved."

Prosecutors at the time said the earliest images dated back to 2009, when Jones was still a serving police officer.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, for which he was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order indefinitely and ordered to sign the sexual offenders’ register for a decade.
