WHITE walkers, master puppeteers and superheroes will take over Abingdon this weekend at the second annual Thames Con sci-fi convention.

Following on from last year's star-studded debut, organisers have promised an even more scintillating event this Sunday.

With the release of Avengers: Endgame being the same weekend as the sci-fi and fantasy convention, the event has embraced a superhero theme.

There will be a Lego Marvel and DC display, ‘God of Thunder’ green screen photo area – complete with hammer Mjolnir, as well as life size props of everyone’s favourite characters.

Herald Series:

For those more enthralled by the culmination of eight seasons spent in Westeros, Game of Thrones fans will have the chance to get a photo with White Walker actor Ross Mullan and his hear tales of working on the hit show.

After re-uniting the cast of 1990s classic Maid Marian and her Merry Men last year, including Sir Tony Robinson, there will also be more nostalgia at the 2019 convention.

With the new Netflix series ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ in the making, there has been a renewed interest in the original film and other Henson productions such as the cult classic Labyrinth.

To celebrate this, there will be a special Dark Crystal ‘making of’ talk and workshop with master puppeteers behind the beloved creations Louise Gold and Hugh Spight.

A close friend of Muppet creator Jim Henson and a legend in her own right, this will be Ms Gold's first ever convention appearance and the first time she has ever done a workshop like this before.

Event director Zay Mirmalek said: “I remember seeing The Dark Crystal when I was far too young and finding it scary but at the same time utterly magical, it’s been one of my favourite films ever since.

“I knew the fanatics would love a chance to not only hear about the making of the original but also get a little insight into the making of the new series."

Herald Series:

To compliment the Dark Crystal workshop, there will be an exclusive Jim Henson Company exhibition with original scripts, storyboards, props and replica Muppets.

Film fans will also not want to miss the ‘Making Movies’ talk with Hollywood prop masters Robert Widin and Bill Hargreaves and Star Wars and Indiana Jones producer Robert Watts.

For budding authors there will also be a writers’ workshop with author Kit Cox and a talk from writer and actor Mark Billingham.
