RESIDENTS will be asked whether they want more parking restrictions in nine areas across Oxford after the county council agreed to the move.

The county council’s priorities for new controlled parking zones (CPZs) are in Cowley, Headington and West Oxford.

Other areas affected could be New Marston, Sandhills and Summertown if residents say they want the restrictions.

Further work might be done in Headington, Florence Park, Barton and Temple Cowley but the council said it cannot afford to roll all the work out at once.

A Cowley Marsh councillor said new zones there had to be made a priority and residents had been subjected to ‘physical and verbal abuse’ after challenging people’s parking habits on side roads.

Jamila Azad, who represents St Clements and Cowley Marsh on the county council, said residents had been waiting for years for tighter restrictions to stop people parking their cars and walking into Oxford and elsewhere.

Further consultations over the controlled parking will now take place for Cowley Centre East, Cowley Centre West and Cowley Marsh.

They will also be held for Headington Quarry and Hollow Way North.

Residents will also be asked about the new powers being rolled out in Lamarsh Road, in West Oxford, New Marston, Sandhills and Waterways, in Summertown.

Many of Oxford residents are already subject to CPZs outside their homes as the county council looks to allow a fair share of spaces for residents and for people parking temporarily.

The council sent out about 16,000 leaflets asking whether residents wanted new CPZs last year.

With a response rate of 17 per cent, council officers said that was typical.
