POLICE have quashed concerns about 'attempted child abductions' near Wantage, and said incidents reported on social media 'did not take place.'

Earlier this week Thames Valley Police confirmed it was investigating reports posted on Facebook, of attempted kidnap cases in Grove and Hanney over the weekend.

However, the force has since posted on its South and Vale Facebook page that the alleged incidents have been investigated and dismissed.

Chief Inspector Matt Bullivant, Deputy Local Policing Area Commander, wrote: "We take reports of this nature very seriously, increased patrols were put in place to help reassure the community and enquiries were carried out to establish the circumstances.

"Following several third party reports about attempted abductions, enquiries were carried out and officers are now satisfied these incidents did not take place.

"We take all community concerns seriously and would always encourage any incidents of this nature should be reported to police directly on 101, as opposed to social media sites."

The post added: "No attempted abduction offences have been recorded or are being investigated at this time."

It did state that a 'genuine suspicious incident' was reported on Saturday but 'no criminal offences have been recorded following the investigation.'

This is thought to refer to an incident in Grove, in which a man allegedly jumped out of a black BMW and ran at a 16-year-old girl as she walked along.

According to Facebook posts from friends of the girl's mum, he had already 'popped the boot' open ready to take her, near the Bellinger dealer, but she ran away.

A girl who commented on the post, who said she was the victim of the Grove incident, wrote: "You told me on the phone earlier that you’re not taking the case any further!

"Stop telling lies to make yourselves look better, you have failed another victim.

"I can assure everyone that what happened to me on Saturday night at 6pm definitely did happen."

She said she reported the incident 10 minutes later and was told the information was being treated as 'intelligence.'

She wrote that police 'don't seem interested,' adding: "Please everyone be safe and wary as this 100% happened to me."

Chief Inspector Bullivant added in another Facebook post on the thread: "I want to reassure everyone that Thames Valley Police always believes and acts upon what all victims, members of the community and witnesses tell us.

"The genuine suspicious incident which was reported to us was believed immediately, and continues to be investigated, in addition to the continued focused policing in the area."
