SPECIAL school pupils in orange wigs, T-shirts and tutus raised more than £400 for charity at this year's Town and Gown run through Oxford, they have revealed.

Nine pupils from Fitzwaryn School in Wantage – one of the county’s best performing special schools – took part in the Junior Oxford Town and Gown race on Sunday, May 12.

One of the students, who is a wheelchair user, even ditched their chair and ran the last 200m of the race, spurred on by the crowd.

After ‘training hard in PE lessons’, the pupils completed the course to fundraise for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

School administrator Angie Wilkins explained: “This is the second year that we have entered the race and Fitzwaryn School were delighted to take a larger group to the 2019 event following a year of training.

“Our runners excelled themselves not only on the race day but in sponsorship money raising over £400 for muscular dystrophy.

“Congratulation to all runners, we are so proud of your achievements.”
