THE SUPPORT available for people with dementia and their loved ones has been in the spotlight this week.

Nationally, Dementia Action Week seeks to raise awareness of the condition and Oxfordshire towns have been holding everything from information drop ins to walks and cinema screenings.

Dementia Friendly Abingdon have organised five days of events, finishing with an awareness day in the town's Market Place tomorrow between 10.30am and 2pm.

There will be two Alzheimer's Society 'singing for the brain' sessions at 11.30am and 12.30pm, as well as a range of charity stalls.

Abingdon’s Abbey Cinema also launched its first dementia friendly screening on Tuesday.

Manager Chris van Praag said:“We were delighted to be approached by Dementia Friendly Abingdon and to be supporting their valuable work in the community.

"This will be first of many dementia-friendly screenings which we hope to arrange monthly.”

In Witney, meanwhile, the town has turned blue to raise awareness, with hundreds of firms changing the colour of their store fronts.

For the last three years, Witney Dementia Action Alliance (WDAA) has organised events in the town, with this year boasting everything from Tai Chi on Church Green to an information session with Witney MP Robert Courts.

On Saturday residents can also join the Golden Memories Walk, starting at Abingdon and Witney College's Witney campus at 10am.

The Witney programme will culminate on Sunday, with a 5k charity fun run and a cake sale at Fat Lil's Cafe on Corn Street.
