WALLINGFORD’S Rugfest has confirmed that The Feeling will headline its reinvigorated event later this month.

The popular musical festival has announced a host of acts ahead of the June 21 to 23 weekend at Wallingford Sports Park.

BRIT-winning rock act The Feeling, who had platinum sales with their album ‘Twelves Stops and Home’, will be joined by Freak Power, Galaxy Thief and The Echo, in a ‘super festival’ which will see Wallingford Beer and Blues return to host the Friday night offering – featuring performances from Climax Blues Band, Papa George Band and Hip Route.

Organisers are boasting that this year’s festival bill is ‘the best line-up ever’ at the firm local favourite, featuring an eclectic array of genres, from traditional jazz to indie electro-pop.

Also on stage will be 2 Tone All Ska’s, Alboa, Fleur Stevenson, The Fooz Fighters, Jack Barnes, The Light Years, Mighty Wub, My Darling Clementine, the Ophelia Ray Band, Rory Evans, RSVP Bhangra and the Unusual Suspects.

The long-running Beer and Blues festival – which was cancelled in 2017 following safety fears at Wallingford’s Regal Centre – is expected to make a full return next year, after Rugfest offered to make Friday ‘Beer and Blues night’.

Chris Norrington, the president of Wallingford Rugby Club – which organises the event – said: “This year is set to be bigger and better than ever – brilliant food stalls, our best line-up ever and plenty of activities and events throughout the weekend.”

Mr Norrington also praised the ‘wonderful volunteers and committee’ behind the family-friendly festival, which returned in 2018 after a short break.

Herald Series:

This year’s event, which is expected to be attended by thousands, will again feature free entertainment for children, with a series of arts and crafts stalls, workshops and a kids’ stage.

A silent disco, giant zorb balls, bouncy castles and bungee jumping are also on offer, but the music is the main attraction.

Festival volunteer Martin Macdonald explained: “It is amazing to see how the event grows in popularity year on year and we are always hugely excited at the calibre and variety of bands that we have on offer.

“This year is no exception and having britpop legends The Feeling playing alongside the Acid Funk of Freak Power or local superstars the Lightyears is a little surreal but absolutely magic.”

Wallingford Rugby Club’s vice chairman, Kris Blaszko, added: “As the countdown begins, we are extremely excited to welcome both locals and guests to Wallingford and to Rugfest.

“This year’s chosen charities are Sue Ryder and Footsteps Foundation, both fantastic causes that we feel strongly about. A brilliant line-up, fun in the sun and all in aid of some great causes - what’s not to love?”

The Sue Ryder charity provides palliative, neurological and bereavement support, while Wallingford’s Footsteps Foundation provides intensive rehabilitation for children and young adults with special needs.

Headliners are set to be play from 6pm on Saturday, in an effort to allow families a chance to watch big live performances together. Weekend and day tickets are still on sale at rugfest.org
