A NEW school which embodies the motto 'be kind, be brilliant' has earned a rave review from Ofsted.

GEMS Primary Academy in Didcot has been rated 'outstanding' across the board, gaining the top judgement after its first ever inspection.

The watchdog's report, which was published last week after a visit in June, said: "The school is a harmonious, high-achieving environment.

"Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural education runs seamlessly as a unifying thread through all aspects of school life.

"Pupils are deeply proud of their school and love coming to school because they feel safe, valued and inspired to learn."

The 277-pupil school opened in Great Western Park in September 2016.

Its principal, Alison Ashcroft, said: "I am absolutely thrilled that the report recognises that every single member of staff is united in their purpose of providing the very best educational experience for every child.

"We set out right from the beginning to create an exceptional school and will continue to build upon the work that has now been judged as outstanding as it continues to grow.

"The children, parents, staff and GEMS Learning Trust [which runs the school] are incredibly proud of what we have achieved."

Ofsted described Mrs Ashcroft as 'unwavering in her determination to provide the very best possible school experience for every pupil.'

The report said teachers' expectations are 'uncompromisingly high' and staff morale is strong.

One staff member quoted in the report said: "Being here has reignited my passion for teaching."

Inspectors said pupils' behaviour is 'exemplary' and they are 'resilient and enthusiastic learners.'

The report added: "Pupils have outstanding attitudes to learning. They value the education they receive and are aspirational for the future.

"They know that unkind behaviour of any sort is not tolerated, and try very hard to uphold the school’s motto of being kind and brilliant."

Assessing the school's curriculum, Ofsted said: "It inspires staff and pupils because it is vibrant and thoughtfully planned.

"Pupils’ skills, knowledge and understanding are developed exceptionally well across a range of carefully interconnected curriculum areas.

"The value of diversity and inclusion is seamlessly woven into the curriculum and has had a strong impact on pupils’ values and beliefs about difference and inclusion."

The academy in Chestnut Drive was rated 'outstanding' in all five areas of assessment.

It currently teaches children up to Year 4, and will have about 450 pupils on roll once all year groups are filled by 2021.

GEMS Learning Trust runs the school, as well as another school in Twickenham.
