THOUSANDS of people have pulled on a Didcot Town shirt during the football club's 112-year history - but not many chart-topping pop superstars.

The eighth-tier club pulled off a bit of a coup at the weekend, when singing sensation Lewis Capaldi unveiled their new shirt for the 2019/20 season.

Mr Capaldi was pictured with the kit at Truck Festival in nearby Steventon, where he played on the main stage on Friday night.

The 22-year-old has had two number one singles and topped the charts with his debut album, but it was the popstar who reached out to the non-league club.

Didcot's press officer, Joffy Chinnock, said: "We were contacted by Truck Festival, who requested a shirt on Lewis' behalf and we were only happy to oblige.

"The hope was that he would wear it on stage, but at least he's happily left Truck with a red and white gift.

"We hope he enjoys the shirt and is always welcome to [home ground] The Loop Meadow Stadium."

The Scottish singer is a huge football fan who supports Glasgow giants Celtic and has been pictured in other clubs' kits before.

Mr Capaldi burst onto the scene last year and achieved major success with hits including Someone You Loved and Hold Me While You Wait.

But the 22-year-old is arguably just as celebrated for his down to earth personality, which has seen him build a large social media following.

The popstar asked for a personalised home shirt when he made contact earlier this month and Didcot, nicknamed The Railwaymen, obliged, sending him a kit with 'Capaldi 69' on the back.

This was shortly after the club sealed a sponsorship deal with Eynsham-based radio station, Jack FM - creating the perfect opportunity for an eye-catching kit reveal.

The club tweeted a photo of the singer-songwriter yesterday evening, in what appears to be the backstage area at Truck.

Mr Capaldi was the very first person to get his hands on the new shirt, but Mr Chinnock says the good publicity has already encouraged others to buy the kit.

The press officer said: "We've already had some interest and we're hoping that after this there will be a bit more."

Didcot have had their share of well-known footballers wear the shirt over the years, including former Oxford United stars Jamie Brooks and Paul Powell.

The Railwaymen are selling merchandise for the first time this year and are accepting individual orders through their website.

It is an exciting time for the club, with Mr Chinnock hoping the one-year deal with JACK FM flourishes into something longer term.

He said: 'We are delighted that JACK FM have become the shirt sponsor for the upcoming season.

"After initial contact last year, they were keen to sponsor the club and I'm pleased to have them on board."
