THOUSANDS of petrol heads descended on an Oxfordshire town this weekend to raise money for good causes.

The three-day Oddballs Rally took over Abingdon Rugby Club between Friday and Sunday for its fifth and 'biggest ever' year.

Alongside a plethora of colourful scooters there was live music from seven bands, dozens of food stalls and traders for revellers to enjoy, as well as the annual fancy dress competition.

Herald Series:

The festival was created in 2015 by Vince Wooloff after friend Ron Morgan died of cancer and has raised more than £30,000 for charity so far.

He said: "This year was the biggest ever with around 2,000 people, and some riding all the way from Germany to come to the event."

Gates opened at midday on Friday, with live bands playing across the three days, plus DJs, and a custom scooter show, as well as games.

Bands included The Corsairs, No Lip, Jack The Lad and rock and roll / psychobilly group The Highliners.

One lucky rider also walked away with £4,000 customised Vespa, which was the prize at the event’s annual raffle.

Herald Series:

Mr Wooloff said: "It was great. It went really well, all the bands said they wanted to come back and we've already booked nine bands for next year, with a couple more slots to increase the live music line up.

"We did pre-sales for next year and have already sold 175 ticket so it looks like it will sell out and is a good indication people enjoyed themselves."

Unlike previous years costumed riders did not ride out to Drayton and Sutton Courtenay on the Saturday.

Mr Wooloff said this was because, with the event growing, there were not enough marshals to man the route this year.

The 52-year-old added: "We've already got a scooter club who have offered to help out next year so that will return."

He said in its place festivalgoers took part in a host of games and challenges.

Although the full total is still to be confirmed, Mr Wooloff said they expected to have raised £10,000, with the majority going to charity Teenage Cancer Trust.

A portion will also be donated to CLIC Sargent, a charity that also helps young people with cancer and their families.

Herald Series:

He said: "Everybody gets that the money is going to a good cause and are really on board with helping us raise as much as possible.

"This time I had my beard shaved and there was an eight-year-old boy who had his hair cut to raise more during the rally."

He added: "I think that is what makes this rally so unique, how willing everyone is to come together to help these charities.

"Everything is in one place so people stay on site for the whole festival which helps create a really nice atmosphere as well."

After this year's Wild West theme, next year Mr Wooloff said the rally would be themed around Gotham, with decorations based on Arkham Asylum and several bands set to dress up as Batman villains.

Oddballs Rally will return in 2020 on August 7-9 at the rugby club.
