WALLINGFORD School headteacher Wyll Willis is retiring following a ‘record year’ of A-Level results.

It was the school’s largest ever cohort of students sitting the exams – 121 - and they achieved the school’s best ever A-Level and Btec results.

Out of 121 students, 28 per cent got A*-A grades, 64 per cent got A*-B grades and 100 per cent got A*-E grades.

Mr Willis is retiring at the end of the month after 13 years as headteacher and has worked in education for 31 years.

He said: “The school was in a mess when I came here and I like to think I’m handing it over when it’s in a good place. It’s a team effort and the staff deserve the credit.”

Father-of-two Mr Willis said GCSE results next week would be his ‘last lap around the block’.

He said: “Over the years I have used a lot of shoe leather to get round the school.

“For me it has always been about getting the kids the best deal.”

Among students sitting exams was Ellis Lovett, 18, from Benson.

She got an A in Music, a B in English and a B in Sociology.

She said: “It’ s been fantastic here - I wouldn’t have got these grades without the support of the staff.”
