THAMES Valley Police have dedicated a space on its new website to highlight women working in the force.

The page 'women in policing' has been set up on the forces' shiny new careers website in a bid to give a spotlight to female officers and encourage more women to join.

On the website it says 45 per cent of people working in Thames Valley Police are women, compared to the 23 per cent in 1989.

It says although 'good progress has been made, there is still much to do to work towards 50/50 representation in all roles across the force'.

The five women who have already been featured on the website, which relaunched last month, are working in the response unit, roads policing, dog section and neighbourhood team.

One of the officer testimonies says: "I had done some work experience first and during that met another Asian female officer and thought ‘if she can do it, so can I’."

Thames Valley Police said: "We have a number of very active staff support networks which provide important face-to-face support and work to share common experiences, concerns and solutions. This includes our Women’s Network, which is committed to improving the working environment for and maximising the potential of women within Thames Valley Police. The network’s focus includes job opportunities, career progression and development, promoting work-life balance, support around challenges associated with menopause, and maternity, paternity, flexible working and adoption leave.

"There are many opportunities for women and men alike, within Thames Valley Police. The force is committed to developing a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, it is only through diversity that we can truly develop new views, solutions and approaches to the social issues we face daily."
