A DRINK driver who was stopped by police for 'erratic' driving has been jailed after it was revealed he was already banned from the roads and carrying drugs and a knife.

Marius Calin appeared for sentencing yesterday having already admitted driving with excess alcohol, driving while disqualified and with no insurance as well as possession of cannabis and a small knife.

Oxford Crown Court heard that the 27-year-old of St Mary's Road, Oxford, was stopped by police after he was seen driving 'erratically' on August 23.

After he was stopped at Between Towns Road he ran off but after a short chase he was arrested and tested for alcohol at Abingdon Police Station.

While there it was discovered he had 60 mcg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath, almost twice the legal limit.

Police also found a quantity of herbal cannabis and a small knife in the car.

Oxford Mail:

At his sentencing hearing it was revealed that Calin had six previous convictions for 12 offences and was already disqualified from driving at the time of his latest offences.

In mitigation defence barrister Robert Lindsey said there had been no damage to property or pedestrians during the drink driving.

He added: "He tells me he is sorry and he was scared and intoxicated at the time.

"He apologises to the police for inconveniencing them."

The court also heard that he had originally come to the country from Romania and had worked in car washes and as a labourer.

Sentencing, Judge Nigel Daly said: "You were drunk. You were not slightly over the alcohol limit, you were almost double the alcohol limit.

"When the police got hold of you you could barely stand up."

Calin was jailed for a total of 12 months and banned from driving for 23 months. He must also pay a victim surcharge.
