OXFORD is among the best areas in the country to charge your electric car according to the government.

The city is in the top 20 per cent of local authorities in the UK for electric car charging points.

According to the Department for Transport, the city has 89 charging points.

The DfT has also ranked each local authority by the number of charging points per every 100,000 people.

In this ranking, Oxford (with its population of 154,327) has 58 chargers per every 100,000 people.

Neighbouring council districts Cherwell and South Oxfordshire also figure high in the rankings.

Both of these areas are in the 60 to 80 per cent of areas for charging electric cars.

Vale of White Horse is in the 40 to 60 per cent, while West Oxfordshire is in the 20 to 40 per cent ranking.

The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has written to local authorities across the country, urging them to take advantage of £5m funding on offer to build up their electric car charging infrastructure and to increase local access to chargepoints.

Data for the rankings was supplied via ZapMap as of October 1, an app which collected data on charging points across the UK.

Oxford's first rapid charge points were installed at Manzil Way gardens in October.
