THESE tiny black-and-white scribbles can brighten the gloomiest day and are enjoyed by millions, but most of us have no idea who their creators are.

Now an Oxford cartoonist has put together a free exhibition in the city to shine a spotlight on his fellow doodlers.

Clive Goddard, who is the current chairman of the Professional Cartoonists' Organisation (PCO) has assembled work by some of the best-loved cartoonists from around the UK including Kipper Williams, Dave Brown and Ralph Steadman.

He has brought their funny, clever and frequently poignant bite-sized masterpieces together in an exhibition at Oxfordshire County Library at the Westgate Centre.

The cartoons he has chosen are all on a theme of 'libraries and literature'.

Herald Series:

The show opened at the beginning of the month and runs until November 24.

Mr Goddard said: "This show features work by almost 50 of the UK’s finest, funniest and most insightful cartoonists including Ralph Steadman, Dave Brown of the Independent, Kipper Williams, creator of the Evening Standard, Martin Rowson of the Guardian, and many regular contributors to Private Eye and the rest of the British press."

Herald Series:

Ralph Steadman, one of those featured in this exhibition, rose to fame in the 1970s when he illustrated a series of stories by 'Gonzo' American journalist Hunter S Thompson, author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Signed originals and prints are on sale at 'very reasonable prices', Mr Goddard said.
