A MAN had to have surgery for a broken jaw after being punched in the face in an 'unprovoked' attack.

The victim, aged in his 20s, was walking in Oxford city centre when he was approached by a man who hit him.

Police are treating the case as grievous bodily harm and said it happened at 12.30am on Friday, last week, in Hythe Bridge Street.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Claire Sadler, based at Oxford police station, said: "This was an unprovoked attack that has left the victim with grievous bodily harm level injuries.

"I am appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or who has any information to please come forward."

The victim has since been discharged from hospital.

Police did not state exactly where along the road the attack took place.

The street is usually busy at that time of morning due to the 'Bridge Thursdays' event at nightclub The Bridge.
