FORGET sitting at home waiting for a card from the Queen - Mary Downing, known to her family as 'naughty nan', celebrated her 101st birthday on the back of a motorbike.

The adventurous great-grandmother, who lives in Dry Sandford near Abingdon, visited Premier Bikes in Wootton for the second year in a row for a birthday spin.

Managing director Andy Valentine took the centenarian out on the roads on her special day, on Friday last week.

Wearing an iridescent purple raincoat, the glamorous gran held on tight during their trip around the countryside.

Her late husband Stan Downing had a motorbike when the pair met, and she said they would ride together down to the seaside.

Mrs Downing's family joined her on the day and then took her for a birthday lunch.

In the past year, Mrs Downing has been going to events held by Mission Motorsport, with her ex-Royal Marine son.

She has been driven around in classic cars and modern sports cars during events held by the charity, which promotes motor sport as a recovery activity for veterans.
