ORGANISATIONS from across Oxford united to stage a special weekend of events at the Ashmolean Museum.

The Beaumont Street venue played host to the One World Festival, which ran on Saturday and Sunday, each day from noon to 4pm.

Organisations on the festival committee included Asylum Welcome, Oxford Council of Faiths, Oxford Jewish Congregation, The Oxford Foundation, Oxford Chinese Community and Advice Centre, Oxford City Council, Oxford Civic Society, Oxford Concert Party and Oxford Hindu Temple and Community Centre.

The museum website said: “This was a special free weekend celebrating the communities and faiths of Oxfordshire through a dazzling array of activities, performances, talks and crafts for all ages.

“For the first time ever the Ashmolean forecourt was also a One World Food Market with a range of delicious vegetarian treats from Indian street food to hash browns, cheesy chips and vegan hots dogs.”

On Saturday there were also craft activities including making a colourful star decoration for the festive season and Baha’i Book Making, with people being invited to make a booklet with hand-stitched pages and a card cover, then decorate it with inspirational words from sacred writings.

Also on offer was a gallery tour of the Islamic Middle East Gallery to uncover some of the highlights of the museum’s world-renowned Islamic art collection.

On Sunday there were a range of activities including creating artwork inspired by the statues, images and symbols of ancient gods from Egypt, Greece and Rome.
