AN art exhibition which aims to raise funds for a new homeless shelter in Glasgow has been officially opened.

Homeless Art Scotland was the brainchild of artist Robert McCaig, 32, from Newton Mearns, his partner Ashley Cameron, 30 and her sister Nicole Cameron, 28, who is currently living in temporary, homeless accommodation.

Glasgow Times:

Everyone who buys a piece of art at the Braehead exhibition will have their name inscribed in the shelter if the artist’s ambitious plan is successful.

The exhibition was launched with the help of Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris and football pundit Tam Cowan.

Robert said: “We started Homeless Art Scotland because we knew there was a need to bring awareness to the current homeless crisis that is going on in our country.

“In the 1950’s and 60’s the UK was at the forefront of house building but since then the numbers have dramatically fallen and we are simply not building enough new homes to accommodate the amount of people that now require housing.

Glasgow Times:

“We wanted to raise funds for a place where people can go not just to rest their head at night but also transform their lives and be inspired by their surroundings and hopefully go on to achieve great things.

“I emailed every single MSP in Glasgow and received five responses of which only three believed in the project and proceeded to give us letters of endorsement.

“Once we had these the next part would be seeing if people would like the artwork enough to buy it so we put it on social media and the response was absolutely terrific.”
