Readers have reacted to the latest update on the multi-million pound West Way development - with some unconvinced the scheme will be an attractive upgrade.

A new community centre, featuring an improved library and the local Baptist church, will officially open on Saturday, January 25.

Oxford Mail:

This paves the way for the launch of the new facilities called West Way Square by developers The Botley Development Company, a joint venture between Mace Developments and Doric Properties.

Readers posting comments on oxfordmail.co.uk have given their views on the proposals, a scaled-down version of the original scheme.

Wellblowme wrote: "I see all the top of the range chains are there as before!

"Looks very 1980s square and horrible. No style. No imagination just money and greed.

Oxford Mail:

"Premier Inn with easy access to A34 and McD's and Costa - very posh NOT. What about the so called restaurants, presume these will be chains too! It will make the Seacourt look upmarket!"

Wilderness 2019 added: "It looks very concrete-y. There's sure to be an Urban Island Heat Effect in the summer. I can't see significant greenery apart from a few token plants in the design.

"Also I can't see seating areas sheltered by arbours with plants growing over. Are there water drinking fountains for people and their dogs?

"Vienna has started to implement all of this and more to help prevent people feeling awful when shopping in built up areas in summer.

Oxford Mail:

"It doesn't seem as though West Way has built climate heating resilience into its design."

Lou Garou suggested that the scheme would be 'impressive' compared to what was there before.

Matt Dillion posted a comment about the potential impact on traffic.

He wrote: "The near constant traffic jams in Botley Road will become even worse than they are at the moment. This will bring the A34 Botley junction to a standstill. LOL."

On the Oxford Mail's Facebook page Carl Drury commented: "Fantastic development for Botley and West Oxford. Looking forward to it opening. 👍🏻"

And Tracy Pearson added: "Anything is probably better than the Westgate.

Developers say the new centre will open this year but have not given a precise date.

Oxford Mail:

David Banks of Mace said: "After four years of working very closely with local residents and stakeholders, we are delighted that these new community facilities will be the first stage of the redevelopment to open, providing a focal point for the community in Botley."
