A VILLAGE primary school would double in size under plans proposed by Oxfordshire County Council.

The authority is holding an informal consultation on expansion at Radley CE Primary School, near Abingdon.

A document explaining the proposal said: "Current pupil forecasts indicate that numbers are expected to continue to grow rapidly at the school, with an increasing shortage of places if the school does not expand.

"Expansion of school capacity is needed to meet the forecast demands of the growing population in the area."

The school in Radley currently has 106 pupils on roll, above its 105-pupil capacity, and admits 15 pupils into reception each year.

Under the proposal, it would grow gradually each year from September 2021, admitting 30 pupils annually.

Eventually, the number of pupils from reception through to Year 6 would be 210.

The council's consultation document states that it is 'essential' to expand the school to ensure there are enough pupil places in Radley.

It highlighted several proposed developments in the area, including 240 new homes in Radley and 270 homes in south Kennington.

To accommodate the expansion, the council would provide four additional classrooms and 'other related accommodation'.

The consultation document said: "Additional land has been made available for the school’s expansion as part of a Section 106 agreement between [the county council] and Radley College.

"It is expected that the cost of expanding the school will be met from money secured from housing developers and capital funding provided by the county council."

Radley Parish Council supports the expansion, according to the document.

The consultation is informal and the council and school will consider responses, before deciding whether or not to publish a statutory proposal to expand the school.
