A PETITION objecting a proposed new takeaway and hairdressers in Carterton has reached almost 150 signatures.

A developer is proposing to turn the former HSBC building in Alvescot Road into a takeaway and hairdressers.

Melvin Long, who works at The Pizzeria in Alvescot Road and has co-ordinated the petition, said: “There’s been nothing there for a couple of years and they’re proposing yet another takeaway and Turkish barbers in the town.

“The objections have come from residents and there’s been some interest in putting something different there.

“Young people have got nothing to do in Carterton so it would be wonderful for them to have something which would get them off the streets.

“I’ve visited local businesses and they want a new business to bring people into Carterton.

“Local people are tired of the same things popping up and they want something that might be able to help people in the community.

“We’ve already got some very good takeaways and hairdressers in Carterton and a lot of people are showing we don’t need anymore.

“There’s also the problem that there could be some environmental issues as the extractor fan in the takeaway would have to be of a high quality to get rid of of the fumes.

“The takeaway might also bring with it litter and rubbish which wouldn’t be good for our streets.”

Carterton Town Councillor Lynn Little - who is also the town's former mayor - said: “I fully support the town council's master plan for the town.

Oxford Mail:

“However businesses are struggling with business rates, all you have to do is take a look at the high street.

“Being someone who is so involved with our master plan, I'm concerned about the proposed businesses coming into Carterton so I fully support this petition.”

Harry Watts, a former district and town councillor, added: “I know my town well and I'm disappointed in my council.

“We have more than enough hairdressers and takeaways already.

“As one of these new businesses opens, another will close.

“There will be a domino effect as the new places do not compliment each other.”
