A 'MASS demonstration' in Oxford this weekend is set to protest against violence on students in India.

Students at Oxford University are planning to stage their action in Broad Street from midday on Sunday.

Organisers have promised speeches, live music, poetry and music.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of student protests in India against the new Citizenship Amendment Act, and violent crackdowns on those protests.

The act, which was passed in December, offers citizenship to non-Muslims fleeing religious persecution from three nearby countries.

However opponents argue that the law itself is illegal, claiming that it grants citizenship on the basis of religion - which goes against the country's secular constitution.

Around 30 people have died in over a month of protests against the law.
