A COMMUNITY penalty for a woman who caused a fatal crash by careless driving has divided Oxford Mail readers.

Amanda Day was given the sentence at Oxford Crown Court on Friday for causing the crash that killed 20-year-old Abingdon motorcyclist Billy Elbrow at the Milton Interchange in August 2018.

Day, 52, of Princes Risborough, ran a red light at the ‘nightmare’ roundabout but denied a charge of causing death by careless driving. However she was found guilty in December.

The verdict and community penalty, reported in the Oxford Mail on Saturday, divided readers online.

One comment said: “Yet another joke sentence... it is about time that certain offences carried a minimum sentence, especially if it results in loss of life.”

This was echoed by another commenter who wrote: “She’s wrecked a family and walks free.”

A third commenter said: “Gets found guilty but walks away from court. Justice clearly has not been done”.

Meanwhile, in defence of Day, one comment said: “As someone who drives around the Milton Interchange every day, I can confirm it’s an absolute disaster of a roundabout... I witness near misses almost every day”.

Another comment supported claims the roundabout was difficult, ‘particularly if it’s raining which makes the markings difficult to see’.

Others noted the speed Mr Elbrow was driving, with one person writing: “The sentence is fair. Big difference driving around 25mph going forward to hitting side of car around 60mph on a bike.

“Now if she hit him front on you would point the blame at the driver.”
