A STREET in Abingdon was closed both ways following a 'serious' crash which witnesses said involved a pedestrian at a road crossing.

UPDATE: Cyclist fighting for his life in hospital after crash

The incident happened on Ock Street in the town centre this afternoon and there was queueing traffic from Victoria Road to Drayton Road.

The collision happened close to Abingdon Fire Station and pictures shared on social media showed an air ambulance, several road ambulances and at least three police cars on scene.

The road was closed for several hours before reopening this evening.

A passer-by, Rachael Banner, from Abingdon, said: "I walked past the aftermath as police and paramedics were tending to a male in his 30s.

"I can't be sure but I think the driver may have been an elderly female as she was being seen to by others in her car."

Ms Banner says the crossing is 'notouriously dangerous' and that there has been a number of accidents on it.

Several other witnesses on social media also said that a male pedestrian was hit by a car, but authorities have not yet confirmed this.

Emergency services have been contacted for further information.

Stagecoach Oxfordshire tweeted that its bus service was unable to serve the street.
