THE 90-mile length of Hadrian’s Wall will be run by two officers based at RAF Brize Norton.

Wing Commander Tom Walker and Squadron Leader Steve Jones aim complete the challenge in three days to raise money for three different charities.

The duo hope to raise £2,000 which will then be split between the RAF Benevolent Fund and the 1AMW (No. 1 Air Mobility Wing) Charities Fund, which incorporates both the Cirencester Opportunity Group and Kajiado Children’s Home.

Covering 30 miles a day, they will start at Bowness-on-Sea, Cumbria on March 31 and finish at Tynemouth, on the east coast on April 2.

Mr Walker said: “We wanted to support the RAF Benevolent Fund because it does an incredible amount for the RAF community in terms of access to support services including mental health.

“I have known colleagues who have received life-changing support, and those who have been helped in smaller ways.”

Mr Jones added: “We’ve been training hard for the challenge, getting out and clocking up the miles.

“It’s going to be tough but we’ll be motivated by all the cash we’re raising.”

Both men work within the No. 1 Air Mobility Wing at Brize Norton, in support of the RAF’s logistics and movements tasks around the world.

The RAF Benevolent Fund is the RAF’s leading welfare charity and supports serving and retired RAF personnel, and their families.

It provides support such as financial grants, youth support schemes on RAF stations and providing mobility aids.

Charlotte Barmby, regional fundraiser at the fund, said: “I’m always impressed by the determination of our supporters who go to great lengths to support the fund.

“Tom and Steve are no different, their generous support will help us to be there for RAF veterans.”
