ARGOS located inside the Sainsbury’s store in Didcot remains open and residents are concerned over coronavirus fears.

Shops across the country have closed after the Government announced a lockdown last night, however shops selling essential items remain open.

One Dicot resident posted on Twitter: “I am disgusted to see that Argos in Didcot is still open. Just because it has moved into Sainsbury’s doesn’t make you an essential shop. You are putting your staff at risk unnecessarily.

“Many who have elderly relatives that they are having to get food for and prescriptions for- what happens to those families if their one outside helper gets the virus. You are putting profit over people. Do the right thing by your staff and close up shop.”

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s said: “Our Argos standalone stores are now closed. We strongly advise customers to order items from Argos for home delivery or in-store collection while shopping for food and other essential items.

The safety of our colleagues and customer is our highest priority:

  • Soon we will have reminders to keep a safe distance of two metres apart displayed throughout our stores.
  • We will be closing every other payment point in our supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol filling stations so that we can keep people further apart.
  • We’re introducing screens at manned checkouts as quickly as possible.
  • We are asking customers to use cards at tills and cash at self-service checkouts where they can.
  • We’re currently working through the detail, but we expect to restrict the number of people allowed in stores at any one time as well. We will also be introducing barriers outside stores to ensure people queue at a safe distance when they’re waiting to get in.”
