AN MP has said kicking vulnerable people out of temporary accommodation during the coronavirus lockdown is unacceptable.

There have been both local and national reports of people temporarily accommodated in hotels and hostels being thrown out with nowhere else to go, following the emergency measures announced by the Prime Minister.

In response, Layla Moran has called for co-operation between central and local government.

The Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon said: “It is heart-breaking to hear that many people and families temporarily housed in hotels and hostels were thrown out yesterday with nowhere else to go.

“It means that just hours after the Government passed its emergency legislation, designed to protect people during the crisis, there are vulnerable people out in the dark without a roof over their head."

She added: “This Government promised it would reduce rough sleeping to zero. It’s time for them to make good on their promise to catch people when they fall.”

In Oxford, there were reports on Facebook of a man who lost his job due to coronavirus social distancing measures, only to then lose his accommodation days later.

The Facebook post by the Oxford Homeless Project, confirmed by Oxford City Council, said the man had been thrown out of a backpacker hostel after it closed due to the lockdown announced on Monday.
